The Vestigial Rebirth

Revival in Eldorath

(Artwork by James Fenner)

“The reborn, put into a vessel that remains a husk of what they once were, looks out upon the world for a second time. Was it spite that brought them back? Was it those who cared, unable to grasp their absence? Had their friend even returned? Who was that?”

The Vestige

A Vestige is an attempt to piece together what remains of an individual by dragging fragments of their memory out of the Leylines. One can use a Mausoleum to overload the Leylines’ mana in a process similar to magic. This welds the fragments together, creating an essence out of echoes of the deceased character (This is what the Dark Whisper item is). This essence is then imbued into a vessel. This essence takes on the shape of the personal item presented in the item requirements to craft a dark whisper. This object will manifest somewhere within the Vestiges body.

Echoes are always on the memories and perceptions of the subject. The deeper the connection one has with the character they are attempting to revive the closer to “whole” the Vestige will become. However, they will never truly be the same. It is not possible to put together every piece of who one once was, because only what is remembered of somebody exists in the Leylines.

  • The Vestige now experiences bouts of out-of-control emotions—it will at times become either too emotional or barely emotional at all.

  • The Vestige experiences memory issues.

  • The body jerks and twitches occasionally, the patchwork soul never truly calling the puppet its home.

  • Vestiges need to eat less often to sustain their bodies than regular Mistwalkers. They can eat once per week and function.

  • Alcohol and substances such as psilocybin will severely worsen the delusions of the dark whispers.

  • Dark Whispers replace the Vestiges mana aura, and can be seen with /showitem.

    • The Vestige is incapable of comprehending their dark whispers as anything but absolute truth, for they are hardwired into their existence.
  • A Vestige does not have a consistent heartbeat or breath. Now and again, a single sharp breath or a single heartbeat may occur randomly.

  • Vestiges have an innate connection with the ghosts of Eldorath; Echoes. Echoes are more likely to interact with Vestiges.

    • Vestiges can physically touch and interact with ALL Echoes, unlike Mistwalkers.
  • Creations born of perspective, Vestiges have no memory of a time they were alone. Their whispers are infinity louder when they are by themselves.

Dark Whispers

A dark whisper is nothing more than a new urge, an idea that wouldn’t have been there in the soul’s old mind. A false memory. It can be as small as a white lie or as grand as a nightmarish story leading to a phobia.

They are roleplayed out to the player’s discretion.

Mechanics

During the vestigial creation, players must write down any dark whispers bestowed. These whispers will be imprinted onto an item that the player must keep in their inventory at all times.

The Vestige no longer has a mana aura. Instead, the Dark Whisper appears. It is up to the Vestige how the Dark Whisper looks under mana sight. The Vestige can only use /showitem to show their dark whisper to those who use mana sight.

  • The Vestige exists to allow a PK’d character to return
  • A characters race can only change to become a vestige
  • A character cannot start as a Vestige.
  • Vestiges cannot metagame their dark whispers.
  • Dark Whispers MUST be relevant to the character’s past life and story in some way, even if the Reviver chooses the whisper.
  • Whispers cannot be forced onto a player. The Vestige must consent to all whispers they are going to receive for a whisper to be made. Collecting proof of consent is recommended.
  • Magic no longer works, as the puppet of the soul is now more align with a dead body - mana cannot flow as well as before. There is an exception for the following magics, which do not require mana flow to work
    • ???
    • ???
    • ???
    • Runewalking
  • One can create a Vestige with any moral compass; however, it is morally questionable to do so, as the result is an objective corruption of who the Vestige used to be.
  • If the player chooses to hard PK’s their Vestige it cannot be revived anymore.
  • If the player is hard PK’d by a lore-run event, they can be revived again.
  • Vestiges cannot be healed with life magic. They still heal at the same natural rate as a Mistwalker.
  • Vestiges can be healed by standard medical means.
  • LTPC’s cannot be revived by players
  • They can be revived by lore members if there is an adequate reason
